I loved this post as well, and the idea that it's a relationship like any other really bears repeating.
And perhaps this is the answer to the horde (who lately seem louder) of would-be authors advocating any of:
Why can't you fill out a form saying WHY my work "isn't right for you"?
Why can't you tell me what's wrong with my query instead of just rejecting me?
Why can't you tell me what's wrong with my writing instead of just rejecting me?
Because that's why we have friends. It's not our desired date's job to tell us why she's just not that into us, and it's not the agent or the editor's job to be our teacher or our critique group.
Awww! Thanks! Assistants don't have to work as hard as editors, so they have more time to frolic on the tinterwebs. YOU'RE busy doing important services for LITERATURE.

I guess the message I take away from it(other than far too much info on how to bag a guy), is it's mainly about the book.
Compromise, polish, and the willingness to move the story forward rather than keep it stuck in some past unworkable state are what counts.
That and having a great story to start with of course.
