Spam, spam, spam

There's something about Monday mornings. Last Monday I had something like 50 sex-spam comments added to this blog, and this morning it was over 100. I'm afraid I'm going to have to start mediating the comments, which will mean your comments won't go up automatically.
Sorry.
If you meet a spammer, kick him for me, ok?

Sorry you're getting hit by the spammers, EA!

Gee, you think you'd at least get "PublishAmerica" type spam instead of porn......

Is there a way to report the spammers to google so they'll be barred from commenting?

zowie!
May I suggest disabling anon comments?
I found that helped reduce a lot of comment spam.

That is so sad. People can be so stupid. Sorry you've had to deal with that.

I don't think that you should disable anonymous comments. That may work fine for some blogs, but I've seen many times when people commented here anonymously for legitimate reasons. (And, after all, if you're anonymous, why can't your readers keep their anonymity?)

Hopefully moderating comments will work for you, although it does mean a little more work.

Yes, that's how I feel, Sheila. And I used to be an anonymous commenter on blogs myself before I had a web "identity".

So we'll try it this way for a while at least.

I'm surprised the word verification didn't do the job.

Word verification only keeps automated spam out. There are still (seemingly) plenty of spammers willing to go in one-post-at-a-time and paste their smut into the comments.

You are right - it's amazing how much manual spam you can get. I run a forum that requires registration, and get at least one new spammer trying to register per day - most from IP address in Asia.

You last line sounded like a blog post I recently had to make about spam:
If you meet a spammer, kick him for me
Though you might find it amusing (or perhaps scary)...
