The pandas love the smell of Listerine. The flamingoes like to see themselves in the mirror. The gorillas enjoy the feel of finger paint. In The Rhinos Sniff Garlic early readers will see how zookeepers use all five senses to keep the animals in their care content.This sounds very interesting. But why are you telling people it's an easy reader, when it would be much more profitable to the publisher and to you as a picture book? Let the editor decide what it is. I'd request this.

I agree -- I'd totally by this for my kids. I bet the photos would be awesome, and the kids love "Behind the scenes at the zoo" pieces....
Great idea. I would prefer funny illustrations, myself.
I love it. I'd really love to see an actual mirror on the facing page for the flamingos, a scratch-n-sniff mouthwash bottle for the panda, a squishy gel drawing panel for the gorillas, etc.
Don't know if I like that title, though, finding neither rhinos nor garlic very appealing. Although, knowing my kids, it might be just the thing that sells it!

EA, could you please explain your comment about not mentioning it's an early reader? Why are these books unprofitable vs. picture books? I would think the market for easy readers would be stronger than it appears to be.

I would have loved a book like this back when I was teaching pre-k and kindergarten. In regard to the pitch, I would list all five senses. As it is written here, there is no mention of the sense hearing. Also, it seems like the title should be more general about five ways to keep zoo animals happy versus “Rhinos.” Just a thought.
Oh, and I'll drop the easy reader part!
It's possible the editor will prefer it as an early reader... but if there's a chance of it being a picture book, those retail for more money, so they're more profitable to author and publisher.
I truly doubt it could be an easy reader, anyway. You wouldn't use words like "Listerine" and "flamingo" if it were.

There's a fairly famous photograph of flamingoes (in a bathroom lined with mirrors) that I believe I saw in the Smithsonian Magazine and that image is one that is hard to get out of one's mind. As someone who loves to illustrate birds (and most animals), this image haunts me. They strike me as rather vein creatures...and I continue to bring this out in a book I have been writing for years. I love writing about animal peculiarities in a poetic fashion. Wish I could say why.
