I really enjoyed Lisa Shanahan's The Sweet, Terrible, Glorious Year I Truly, Completely Lost It -- back in the antipodean dark ages, when it was called My Big Birkett. *squints* And is that In Search of Mockingbird in the middle?
EA, Do you have a "If it isn't on your shelf/if you haven't read it I can't take you seriously as an aspiring children's author?" rule? And if so, what should be on OUR "must read" kiddie shelves?
Oh, no, that's silly. There are so many wonderful books to read, you can't expect anyone to have read all of them.
However. I am always a little shocked and dismayed at the number of people I meet at conferences who haven't read the Usual Suspects in the age group and genre for which they're attempting to write. You're writing a re-telling of Cinderella for middle graders and you've NEVER HEARD of Ella Enchanted? Come on.
